Cr Libro Mustica was elected Mayor of Moira Shire Council for 2018/19 at a special meeting in Cobram yesterday.
Cr Peter Lawless will serve as Deputy Mayor.
This is Cr Mustica’s second consecutive term as Mayor; last year he was elected as the first Italian-born Mayor of Moira Shire.
“I was honoured to be elected Mayor last year and it goes without saying that chairing my first council meeting was a daunting task which gave me many sleepless nights,” Cr Mustica said.
“But we got through it and as the year progressed we signed off on the largest budget delivered by Council.
“I am deeply passionate and committed to further advance the area that I love.
“I believe it is vital for members of the community to be confident in their local council and for locals to have a voice and know that we are here to listen.
“We need to continue investing in our people and create a community where our youth can not only get a job, but develop a lifelong career rather than moving away to the city.
“I am again deeply honoured to be re-elected Mayor of Moira Shire and I am looking forward to working with you all and continuing the great work of the council to turn Moira Shire into the amazing community we know it can be.”
This is Cr Lawless’s first stint in a leadership role within Moira Shire Council since the 2016 election however he is certainly no stranger to representing and advocating for the community.
He is a long-term member and past Vice President of Grains Group Victoria and has been a member of the Burramine CFA for more than 40 years where he has been Captain for many of those years.
Cr Lawless has also been President of the Burramine Sports Club, both President and Secretary of the Tungamah Football Netball Club and has served for many years on the committees of the Burramine Tennis Club, the Burramine Hall Committee and the Tungamah Recreation Reserve Committee.
Cr Lawless said he was “thrilled and honoured to be elected Deputy Mayor and will work with all groups across the shire to achieve fantastic results for all”.
