Moira Shire Council paid its respects to the veterans and the fallen who served the nation as Australia commemorated the 50th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War, Friday 18 August.

“This momentous occasion serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made and the indomitable spirit demonstrated by the servicemen and women involved, particularly those from the Shire who were directly affected by the conflict,” said Mr. John Tanner AM, Chair of the Council’s Panel of Administrators.

Mr. Tanner was joined in the commemorative message by Panel Administrators Ms Suzanna Sheed and Dr. Graeme Emonson PSM and the Council’s Acting CEO Mr. Joshua Lewis.

The Vietnam War lasted from 1955 to 1975 and had a profound effect on both Vietnam and the nations involved in it.

“As we reflect on this chapter of history, it is important to recognise the contributions and resilience of the individuals who played a vital role in bringing about the end of the conflict,” said Mr. Tanner.

“We pay tribute to the soldiers and veterans who selflessly served our country and demonstrated unwavering courage and dedication in the face of adversity.

“We honour their sacrifices and express our profound gratitude for their commitment to preserving peace and freedom.

“We also pay respect to the tireless efforts of local RSL organisations and volunteers, along with those in the entertainment industry who supported the Australian troops throughout the conflict.

“They all provided aid and support to those involved in, and who were affected by the war and played a vital role in assisting them through adversity and healing their wounds,” he said.

Mr. Tanner said, it was also important to recognise the Vietnamese people, who had endured hardships throughout the war and who played a crucial role in rebuilding their nation and forging a path towards reconciliation and unity.

“As we commemorate this significant milestone, let us honour the memory of those who lost their lives and express our gratitude to all those who contributed to bringing about an end to the Vietnam War.

“It is through their collective efforts that we have seen healing, reconciliation, and the continued pursuit of peace.”

The Administrators and Council staff encouraged individuals and communities to remember this historic event and engage in activities that promote understanding, dialogue, and reconciliation to build a better future for all in the municipality.
