Time to prepare for changes to Kerbside Bin Collections

Moira Shire Council is encouraging residents to get ready for changes to kerbside bin collection services this February. These changes are designed to reduce landfill waste and support more sustainable waste practices across the community.

From February, Red Lid Landfill Bins will be collected fortnightly, while Green Lid Organics Bin will move to weekly collections. While adjusting to these changes may take time, a little preparation can make the transition smoother for your household.

Moira Shire Council Acting CEO Bryan Sword said the best way to prepare was by learning how to sort your waste correctly.

“Understanding what goes in each bin will reduce your reliance on your landfill bin, free up space, and ensure valuable materials are recycled or composted rather than sent to landfill.”

“We encourage all our residents to download the Moira Waste Info App for bin collection calendars, reminders, and the A-Z waste disposal guide. You can also visit Council’s website for this information and more resources. If you need assistance, contact Council’s Customer Experience Team. They’re happy to help you navigate the online platforms or provide printed materials if you visit them in person,” Mr Sword said.

Diverting waste from landfill benefits the environment and helps reduce costs for ratepayers. By using the Green Lid Organics, Yellow Lid Recycling, and Purple Lid Glass bins effectively, as a Council we can lower the amount of waste sent to landfill and deliver services more efficiently.

Council understands concerns about the hygiene and smell of fortnightly landfill bin collections. Weekly organic collections will help, and these simple tips can keep your bins fresh:

Wrap food scraps in newspaper or double bag with your Council approved compostable liner.
Rinse out your bins with soapy water after collection.
Store bins in shaded areas to minimise odours.
