Moira Shire Council Launches First Resale Shed

Moira Shire residents now have a new option for upcycling and finding bargains from reusable items with the opening of the Resale Shed at the Cobram Resource Recovery Centre.
This facility is the first Resale Shed in the shire and is supported by the Circular Economy Councils Fund, delivered by Sustainability Victoria under the Victorian Government’s circular economy policy.
At the Resale Shed, discarded but still useable household furniture, toys, building materials, and more will have the opportunity for a new lease on life. These items then can be resold, helping divert waste from landfills and extend the life of valuable resources.
Moira Shire Council Chair Administrator Graeme Emonson PSM said this new Resale Shed represented a significant advancement in Council’s commitment to sustainability and the circular economy.
“Our priority is to minimise waste generation and offer alternatives to landfill disposal. Alongside the Resale Sheds, Council has already introduced drop-off points for hard-to-recycle items such as soft plastics and textiles to help us meet State and Federal targets of diverting 80per cent of waste away from landfill,” Dr Emonson said.
When materials are sent to landfill, their value is lost. Recirculating and upcycling items instead, keeps their value in the economy. In a Circular Economy, greater value is generated from products by prolonging their life through repair and reuse. Moira Shire Council is committed to supporting a thriving second-hand economy.
The Cobram Resale Shed is just the beginning, with plans to open a Resale Shed at the Numurkah Resource Recovery Centre also underway.
“We are excited to offer this resource to our community and look forward to the opening of the Numurkah Resale Shed, which will further our efforts towards a more sustainable future,” Dr Emonson said.
