Moira Shire households are set to make a positive impact on reducing landfill waste, as new purple lid glass bins will be delivered in the coming weeks. This rollout marks a major step forward in reducing waste and making recycling simpler and more effective.

The purple lid bins are part of the latest efforts to ensure more materials stay out of landfill, thereby reducing costs for ratepayers and contributing to a healthier and more sustainable environment.

Close to 14,000 purple lid glass bins will be delivered to homes ready for the launch of a dedicated glass recycling service. This initiative aligns with the Victorian Government’s move toward a standardised four-stream waste and recycling service.

Once delivered, residents are encouraged to start using their purple lid bins straight away. The new glass recycling service is set to begin in December, with collections happening once every four weeks.

“Separating glass from other recyclables will help improve the quality of all recycling, reducing contamination and ensuring more materials can be repurposed into useful products, such as new bottles or even roads,” Moira Shire Council Chief Executive Officer Matt Morgan said.

This shift is an important step toward meeting State and Federal waste reduction targets. To help reach the goal of reducing landfill by 80per cent, starting next year, the red lid landfill bin will be collected fortnightly, while the green lid organics bin will be collected weekly.

Moira Shire Council Chair Administrator Dr Graeme Emonson PSM said the introduction of the four-stream system presented an exciting opportunity for community to rethink their waste habits.

“By embracing these changes, we can make a real impact reducing landfill costs, improving the quality of recyclables, and contributing to a more sustainable community. It’s a great chance for all of us to think about ways to refuse, reduce, reuse and recycle in our daily lives,” Dr Emonson said.

To assist residents in the roll out of the purple lid glass bin, and the upcoming collection frequency changes, Moira Shire Council staff will be available to answer questions at the following events.

Saturday 5 October – Nathalia Show, 9am-4pm
Wednesday 23 October – Numurkah Show, 9am-4pm
Saturday 26 October – Cobram Lions Market, 8.30am – 12.30pm
Saturday 27 October – Yarrawonga Foreshore Market, 8.30am-12.30pm

Residents are reminded to place only glass bottles and jars in the new purple lid glass bins. Items like window glass or broken drinking glasses should be disposed of in the general landfill bin or taken to the Resource Recovery Centres.
