Glass bin

Glass Pic.png

Glass is a valuable material that can be recycled again and again, providing a sustainable packaging options for products. By changing the way you sort your waste at home, we can do more with our recyclables. Glass in our mixed recycling bin is contaminating other recyclable materials, such as plastic and cardboard, make them either unrecyclable or a lower quality product. By having a cleaner recycling stream, we are able to recycle more and keep these valuable materials out of landfill.

What can go in your glass bin?

Glass bottles and jars from food and drinks, including:

  • Soft drink, juice, water and milk bottles - keep lids on
  • Beer, wine and spirit bottles - keep lids on
  • Sauce, condiments and oil bottles and jars - keep lids on

Glass bottles and jars from medicine and toiletries, including:

  • Medicine bottles - keep lids on
  • Vitamin and supplement bottles and jars - keep lids on
  • Bottles and jars from toiletry and cosmetic items such lotions, gels and creams - keep lids on

What can't go in your glass bin?

  • Loose lids and caps from bottles and jars
  • Corks, pumps, sprays and droppers
  • Bottles and jars with non-glass items inside such as cigarette butts, food or liquids
  • Glass kitchenware, such as drinking glasses, crockery and ceramics, glass storage containers and glass cookware
  • Glass household items, such as vases, mirrors, light bulbs and fluorescent tubes
  • Plastic bags or plastic packaging.

Can I share my glass bin with a neighbour?

It can be challenging for some to find the space for another bin, especially those in units and flats. The default kerbside glass bin size is 120L.

We offer a shared service for both the kerbside organics and the glass bin service for units and multiple residences where a reduced number of bins is adequate for the volume of either organic material or glass being generated.

Residents will need to contact Council to request an exemption form.

Why separate glass? Aren't materials separated and recycled at a sorting facility?

Glass, when mixed with other recyclable materials, often shatters and contaminates valuable, easy-to-recycle materials such as paper, plastic and cardboard. This reduces these materials quality and ability to be recycled, which lands them in landfill. By separating glass effectively, more materials from the recycling bin can also be recycled. It also ensures all glass is recycled, including glass shards.

Bins for businesses

Moira Shire's kerbside collection service is designed for residential use. However, some businesses, schools and, commercial operations utilise Council's current kerbside collection service.

If your commerical business has a kerbside recycling bin, you may have a 120lt kerbside glass bin, if your business generates glass waste. This service is an opt in for businesses.

A kerbside organic collection service may be helpful to a commerical business selling food products with the change of collection frequency for organics to weekly. The need to avoid food and garden products going to landfill is vital, and a kerbside organics service is a great way to do so.

Commerical businesses are not a part of the mandatory residential collection service, businesses can choose to move to a private service at any time, and choose which kerbside bin services they require.

If you have a commerical business and are interested in having a kerbside collection service, please contact Council. Please note, if you are a tenant, you will need the request to come from the property owner or the agent acting on their behalf.
