Landfill bin

Landfill Pic.png

The need to reduce what goes into our landfill bins is dire. We estimate Cobram landfill will reach full capacity by 2037 and following that, we will have no landfill.

Ways to reduce your landfill waste may include avoid buying items with lots of packaging as this wastes valuable resources. Choose and invest in reusable items like keep cups, cloth bags and a reusable water bottle. Look at ways to repurpose discarded items, especially items that can't be recycled. Consider repairing rather than replacing. Make sure you separate all recyclable items from your rubbish and put them in your recycling bin with the yellow lid.

Please note that we do not provide a hard rubbish collection pick up. However, furniture and goods of a reasonable condition (determined by staff) and can be resold. These items can be dropped off at any of our Cobram and Numurkah Resale Sheds free of charge.

I have a large family, can I get a larger landfill bin?

If you have a large household with 6 or more occupants, own your own home and, require a larger landfill bin, you may be eligible for a larger 240lt landfill bin from Council at cost. You will be required to submit a signed Statutory DeclarationFees do apply. If you do not own your own home, you must get your landlord or property manager to apply.

We also encourage residents to reduce and reuse their waste. The best way to reduce your waste is to avoid creating it in the first place. Avoid buying items with lots of packaging as this wastes valuable resources. If you haven't already, invest in reusable items like coffee cups, cloth shopping bags and reusable water bottles. And recycle as much as you can. See our A-Z Waste Guide for more information on recycling.

I have children in nappies, am I eligible for a larger bin?

To apply for a larger bin, those who have a household with two or more children in nappies, will need to provide a signed statutory declaration form as evidence. Fees do apply. If you do not own your own home, you must get your landlord or property manager to apply.

We encourage households to do their best to reduce waste going to landfill by reducing, recycling and composting. This additional service will be reassessed at the end of the rating period at the end of each financial year.

Moira Shire is offering residents a cloth nappy and reusable sanitary product rebate of 50% of the purchase price with a maximum refund of $150. This is to assist in the reduction of waste to landfill.

My medical condition means I generate more waste, can I get an additional landfill bin?

For residents with medical conditions that result in larger than usual waste generation, they may apply for a special consideration kerbside collection service where an additional 120L landfill bin is provided, free of charge.

The waste generated must be able to be disposed of through the kerbside collection and cannot include sharps or other hazardous medical waste.

Council will request suitable documentation in writing from residents in order to support the request for special needs collection, such as a letter from your medical practitioner. This will be reviewed annually. For further information please contact Council.

My landfill bin is full after a week, is a fortnightly collection enough?

The average bin Moira Shire is around 51% (61Lt) full on a weekly collection day (March 2024 waste audit) for weekly. Over 27.8% of the waste in the average landfill bin (by volume) can be diverted to be recycled, either in the kerbside recycling bin or accepted at Resource Recovery Centres. 4.3% of this can be composted.

When food and garden organics, recycling and glass bin are used correctly, the average household in Moira Shire will have more than enough space in their waste bins to hold a fortnight worth of waste.

This change is also in-line with the Victorian Government circular economy policy and plan Recycling Victoria: A new economy, which has set key actions for all Victorian Local Government to have zero organic material to landfill by 2030 and 80% of materials currently going to landfill to be diverted to alternative disposal methods by 2030.

By making this switch of landfill and organics kerbside collection, we hope to divert over 5,000 tonnes of organic material a year from landfill.

The majority of Victorian councils are planning or have already moved to fortnightly landfill collection.

Bins for businesses

Moira Shire's kerbside collection service is designed for residential use. However, some businesses, schools and, commercial operations utilise Council's current kerbside collection service.

If your commerical business has a kerbside recycling bin, you may have a 120lt kerbside glass bin, if your business generates glass waste. This service is an opt in for businesses.

A kerbside organic collection service may be helpful to a commerical business selling food products with the change of collection frequency for organics to weekly. The need to avoid food and garden products going to landfill is vital, and a kerbside organics service is a great way to do so.

Commerical businesses are not a part of the mandatory residential collection service, businesses can choose to move to a private service at any time, and choose which kerbside bin services they require.

If you have a commerical business and are interested in having a kerbside collection service, please contact Council. Please note, if you are a tenant, you will need the request to come from the property owner or the agent acting on their behalf.
