Organics bin

Organic waste makes up a large proportion of our household waste. When added to landfill it is broken down in an anaerobic environment (that's an environment without oxygen) and creates methane, one of our worst greenhouse gases! These gases contribute to global warming, therefore the need to reduce these gases is essential. And what better way to divert it from landfill than to recycle it into a valuable product.

Each household has a small kitchen caddy and an ongoing year's supply of green compostable bin liners. If you are not within the residential zones but would like to turn your organic waste to compost, you can always have your own compost bin , worm farm or chooks. We also have the option for residents who don't have an organics kerbside service to drop their household food and garden waste to our organic bins at our nine Resource Recovery Centres. If you would like a kitchen caddy and compostable bags, please get in contact with us.

What can go in your organics bin?

  • Food scraps, including dairy and citrus
  • Bones and meat
  • Prawn shells and fish scales
  • Soiled paper towel and tissues
  • Grass clippings, weeds, leaves
  • Flowers
  • Small non-treated timber off cuts
  • Prunings and small branches <10cm diameter
  • Animal droppings (including dog)

What can't go into your organics bin?

  • Plastic, including fruit stickers
  • Stones, rocks and rubble
  • Soil and sand
  • Treated or painted timber
  • Large logs or stumps
  • Non-compostable household waste
  • Garden tools and hoses

Where does our organic waste go?

Can I share my organics bin with a neighbour?

It can be challenging for some to find the space for another bin, especially those in units and flats. The default kerbside organics bin size is 240L.

We offer a shared service for both the kerbside organics and the glass bin service for units and multiple residences where a reduced number of bins is adequate for the volume of either organic material or glass being generated.

Residents will need to contact Council to request an exemption form.

I live on a rural property and don't have an organics bin

Council provides a kerbside collection service in all towns and along connector roads within Moira Shire.

The kerbside organic collection services all households in residentially planned zones. If you are not within the residential zoned area but would like to turn your organic waste in to compost you can always have your own compost bin, worm farm or chooks. We also have the option for residents who don't have an organics kerbside service to drop their household food and garden waste into our organic bins at our Resource Recovery Centres. If you would like a kitchen caddy and compostable bags for your household, please get in contact with Council. If you are interested in an organics kerbside service on your rural property, we can investigate this for you, please get in contact with Council

Why have we changed the organics collection to weekly?

Rotting organic waste in landfill releases methane into the air and contributes greatly to climate change. A fortnight of food and garden organic waste in a kerbside bin can lead to unpleasant odours, especially over the summer months.

Research has shown that a more frequent collection of food and garden organics is a driver in encouraging change to reduce food waste in landfill bins.

This change is also in-line with the Victorian Government circular economy policy and plan Recycling Victoria: A new economy, which has set key actions for all Victorian Local Government to have zero organic material to landfill by 2030 and 80% of materials currently going to landfill to be diverted to alternative disposal methods by 2030.

By making this switch of landfill and organics kerbside collection, we hope to divert over 5,000 tonnes of organic material a year from landfill.

We are also joining many other Victorian councils who have already successfully made the collection switch.

Bins for businesses

Moira Shire's kerbside collection service is designed for residential use. However, some businesses, schools and, commercial operations utilise Council's current kerbside collection service.

If your commerical business has a kerbside recycling bin, you may have a 120lt kerbside glass bin, if your business generates glass waste. This service is an opt in for businesses.

A kerbside organic collection service may be helpful to a commerical business selling food products with the change of collection frequency for organics to weekly. The need to avoid food and garden products going to landfill is vital, and a kerbside organics service is a great way to do so.

Commerical businesses are not a part of the mandatory residential collection service, businesses can choose to move to a private service at any time, and choose which kerbside bin services they require.

If you have a commerical business and are interested in having a kerbside collection service, please contact Council. Please note, if you are a tenant, you will need the request to come from the property owner or the agent acting on their behalf.
