Recycling bin

What can and can't go in your organics bin.png

Recycling your waste keeps items out of landfill, prevents pollution and reduces greenhouse gasses by taking away the need for extracting, refining and processing raw materials. By improving our recycling habits, we can help keep the environment clean and preserve our natural resources.

For a full list of what goes into your kerbside recycling bin please see our A-Z guide of waste disposal. There are also many items you can recycle other than your kerbside recycling bin, such as batteries, soft plastic and electronic waste. For more information, head to what we accept.

Please note that we do not provide a hard rubbish collection pick up. However, furniture and goods of a reasonable condition (determined by staff) and can be resold. These items can be dropped off at any of our Resource Recovery Centres free of charge.

Ways to reduce your waste

Recycling is not just about what you can put in your bin - we should always think about reducing our waste.

Reduce

The best way to reduce your waste is to avoid creating it in the first place. Avoid buying items with lots of packaging as this wastes valuable resources. You throw them away and create rubbish which then produces more greenhouse gases.

Reuse

Choose and invest in reusable items like keep cups, cloth bags and a reusable water bottle. Look at ways to repurpose discarded items, especially one's that can't be recycled. Consider repairing rather than replacing.

Recycle

Recycling keeps usable materials out of landfill. Recycled materials can be turned back into raw materials that can be used in the manufacture of other items. Make sure you separate all recyclable items from your rubbish and put them in your recycling bin with the yellow lid.

A few tips to recycle right

  • Don't place recyclables into plastic bags
  • Avoid placing soft plastics into recycling bin
  • Clean out containers and plastic bottles
  • Buy Australian recycled products
  • Use recycled paper and toilet paper
  • E-waste can be recycled but not in your kerbside bin - please take to your nearest Resource Recovery Centre

Bins for businesses

Moira Shire's kerbside collection service is designed for residential use. However, some businesses, schools and, commercial operations utilise Council's current kerbside collection service.

If your commerical business has a kerbside recycling bin, you may have a 120lt kerbside glass bin, if your business generates glass waste. This service is an opt in for businesses.

A kerbside organic collection service may be helpful to a commerical business selling food products with the change of collection frequency for organics to weekly. The need to avoid food and garden products going to landfill is vital, and a kerbside organics service is a great way to do so.

Commerical businesses are not a part of the mandatory residential collection service, businesses can choose to move to a private service at any time, and choose which kerbside bin services they require.

If you have a commerical business and are interested in having a kerbside collection service, please contact Council. Please note, if you are a tenant, you will need the request to come from the property owner or the agent acting on their behalf.
